Learning Log Entry on "Teaching Reading in Mathematics and Science"

This reading had at least a couple of worthwhile ideas, one of which, at least, was somewhat new to me.  The authors first talked about scaffolding math and science readings by going over some of the ideas and vocabulary before the students start reading.  This pretty much reflects what we have been learning in class, so it is nothing new to me even though it is a good idea.  The authors also mentioned something called SQRQCQ (Survey, Question, Read, Question, Compute, Question) which seemed like a pretty good strategy for dealing with mathematical word problems.  I don't remember seeing this method before, so this made the time reading the article worth my time.

One thing they didn't mention is the fact that most math/science text books are written more like reference works than as books meant to be read from cover to cover.  Perhaps an article on teaching students to dig information out of reference books would be edifying.
