When I came into the tutoring session, the kids were being read the riot act. It seems one of the kids got hurt during horseplay on the way to the bathrooms, so they got a lecture about keeping a line on the way to the bathroom, not playing in the bathroom (a "filthy" place), and general safety. It sounded like they also got their computer lab privileges revoked because some kids were surfing on the wrong sites. This is too bad because the computers gave the kids something to look forward to besides sitting in the multi-purpose room for a couple of hours. Oh well.
One of the volunteers brought in some family pictures to show to Juan, who seems very concerned that his new baby brother is so small (he was premature). I guess the volunteers has twin brothers were born a little early as well, and she wanted to reassure Juan. Juan's mother was back from the hospital, but his brother was still there after almost a week, so I can see how he is concerned.
Juan and I only had a very simple piece of homework to do today. It had to do with combining two similar sentences into one sentence using "and" to join the nouns. After a couple of hints on the first example, Juan pretty much did the rest without help. In the process of helping him, I told him the meaning of "sleet." Juan knows all the common words you might expect a kid his age to know, but he doesn't know some of the less common words. I gave him an erasure pen that I have, because Juan erases a lot and his pencils always have worn out erasures. I asked him to share it with his neighbor who is also always wearing out his erasure. I'm hoping this will help Juan be a little better at sharing, since last time Juan taunted his neighbor about how he couldn't use any of Juan's large box of mechanical pencils.
I finished up my session by
tutoring a couple of other kids, but it
seemed like no one had much homework that day, so I left pretty early.
