This site bills itself as a nonpartisan policy and program resource center - which is to say that it is sort of a political information and action site for school health care issues. It has fact sheets on such issues as childhood obesity, mental health, and psychotropic drugs; and it has pages on various health issues like diabetes and medication management. This seems like an excellent website for someone to bookmark if they are an educational professional with any kind of interest in health issues (which should describe all teachers to one extent or another).
I browsed through an article on the site summarizing a medical journal article about pediatric food allergies. It talked about how anaphylaxis in children seems to be increasing in prevalence, and the article also talked a little bit about on site emergency treatment measures (epinephrin). I wonder how many schools even have an "EpiPen" on site for anaphylactic emergencies - or how many school staffs would have the kind of decision making ability needed to use an EpiPen if the need arose?
They also had an excellent article on childhood obesity, covering such aspects as the growing obesity rates, the demographics of obesity (in the U.S., poverty increases the likelihood of being obese), health consequences, and the probable roles of exercise and nutrition on growing obesity.
Aside from these articles, it seems like a big focus of the site is to provide a forum for numerous news alerts, grant alerts, and timely news articles. One article on "Children in Immigrant Families" caught my eye, because I'm interested in teaching immigrant students. The article stated that immigrant children are almost twice as likely to lack health insurance as native kids, and they are about half as likely to be participating in Medicaid. Clearly these kids are falling through the cracks in the system, and I really hate to think what happens to most of them if they get seriously sick.
I would definitely recommend this website be checked out by all the
students in the health education class.
