When I was a kid, I spent a lot
of time day dreaming
about becoming an astronaut or making up my own superhero
adventures in my head. Then for a couple of years or so I spent most of
that same time
thinking about a stupid computer game. That, in a nutshell,
sort of summarizes my relationship with the game Everquest. It's
sort of like a fantasy world made concrete - if not exactly real.
Certainly, watching a bunch of little pixels on a computer screen
is a far cry from the sensations provided by real life, but
Everquest is still incredibly immersive and compelling.
I will be filling this web page with musings on what Everquest (and games like it) mean to me and what I think they portend for society in the very near future. If you're a player, you might enjoy reading another players views on the game - which I have tried to aim at a slightly broader perspective than the usual cheat site and player bitching board. If you haven't played, I think you should learn something about this game, because I truly think it is a harbinger of things to come (ominous, huh?).
For now, have a look at the first essay I ever did on this site:
Everquest and Virtual Reality - About how Everquest is part of our very earliest experiences with virtual reality - and as crude as it is it still clearly shows how VR is going to have a huge impact on how we spend our free time and on society in general.
